My mom was the same way about my ADHD which was finally identified as being at the root of pretty much all my toxic emotional bullshit. It wasn't until after years of knowing optimally-medicated me that she started to come around. This was the same mom who had a library of self help books, a brother who committed suicide, and another who developed full-blown paranoid schizophrenia.
The brain is at the center of this mysterious experience called self.
