The only external device that limits movement of the shift linkage is the reverse lockout. The 3-4 gate is right in the center and that centering mechanism, including the springs, is all inside the transmission.
Does it feel like anything is either binding, or loose?
Does it help to angle the lever slightly left or right of center before pulling back into fourth gear?
