Either that, or you can be slower with the clutch to give it more time for the revs to drop.

Exactly. I agree with #1, however on #2 if you are slower easing out the clutch then that is like riding the clutch ( pretty sure that is more friction on pressure plate...thus more wear +tear on clutch components.)
