Probably stems from the little racecars I grew up with, designed to accommodate multiple classes and drivers via engine swaps and radically different suspension setups, nothing is permanent except for the frame. Body panels come off and go back on in seconds so looks aren't permanent either as far as I'm concerned.
As long as the engine sits in the same location and the major suspension points are not seriously modified it's the same car as far as I'm concerned.
Must be the difference between those that take their cars to the track on Saturday vs those that get coffee.
