This the way I clean engine bays.
The only thing I cover is the Alternator, and thats with a plastic bag. You don't have to go crazy with tape either. Remember, anything electrical in the engine bay is water resistant. Also remember, that there is a huge difference between water resistant and water proof. DO NOT use high pressure water, this can force water into places it shouldn't go.
Low pressure rinse of the entire engine bay including the bottom of the hood.
Spray a All Purpose Cleaner and let it dwell for a few minutes. I would recommend either Adams Polishes or Meguiars.
I would then use a lug nut brush to agitate any debris or oil on whatever parts I can reach, including under the hood. For any other parts I cannot reach lower in the bay I would use a wheel woolie.
Rinse off the engine bay and then I would use compressed air to get the majority of the water off
Then I would spray something like Adams In & Out Spray or Meguiars hyper dressing and I'm done.
