But regarding your question, I see a lot of people going to 225/45s on the stock 17s without issue. 245/40 can be done, but is certainly less than ideal and only seems to be done when trying to stick to a stock class in autox. While some will still argue that a 225mm on a 7" rim still isn't 'perfect', it's still going to put more rubber on the ground and a stickier compound from an RS-3/RE-71/Rival S/etc. will give you more grip, providing the outside temps are acceptable.
