I used to build all mine. I agree you can end up with better parts, but I'd say it's been 10 years or more since I've found it less expensive to build an entire computer from scratch, particularly if you are willing to go "scratch and dent" at the Dell outlet and watch for sales. Now if you can salvage parts from your last build then all bets are off.
