I would suggest that you wash it with a soap (like dishwashing Dawn) to take off the old wax. Then purchase a clay bar kit (at any auto store).

Wash the car (to get rid of all the old wax), clay bar the car (to remove unwanted particles that may be imbedded in the clear coat), then wax it with a good, name brand wax.

Now, if it looks perfect, you may consider an opti-coat type stuff. If it doesn't look all that perfect, I'd suggest you skip the coating. Just wash it when it gets dirty and wax it a couple times a year.
