It still operates under the same principles. If the engine stalls, the car stays in "run." If you turn the key, or press the button, then you are forcing the car out of run mode.

I also looked at the Owner's Manual. It looks like the steering lock function won't engage until you open a door. So that's one less thing you need to worry about. You'd still lose power brakes and power steering but at least the car is driveable.
