I think the bolded statement is a good test to prove the theory.

I want to clarify OP's statements as they're a bit confusing currently. Benlaz88, could you please clarify if the below statements are all true?

1) The noise exists with the car out of gear, clutch depressed?
2) What happens with car out of gear, clutch not depressed?
3) The noise goes away when the car goes into gear, clutch depressed?

That is not a good sound and something I can honestly say I have not heard before.
