And it's interesting how dramatic the effect of turning one off is. Part of the old pre-takeoff check is to verify operation of both.

Yeah even single-engines are pretty redundant, two fuel tanks, two pumps, two mags (like you said), two intakes, often even with a jug blown out the other 3 cylinders will still fire (but not always).
