I disagree. There's always risk but it can be mitigated by the approach. Friendly, non-confrontational honesty is a skill that takes practice. If you can first shed any expectation for the outcome and focus on candor, it helps the other party to open up.
If they're nice already and you send the message that you aren't judging them, they might surprise you.
