Most of the younger guys have no idea how much gas some older cars used.
With gentle driving and careful throttle my 70 Coronet R/T got about 8 MPG. If I opened up all 3 carbs (for 6 barrels) you could watch the needle drop and I doubt I was getting 2. It was not unknown to use up a whole 20 gallon tank in a day. Now, gas cost 60 cents a gallon and you may think that is cheap but my army pay was $33 a
day so burning gas was an expensive hobby. When I bought my Corvair and got a whopping 15 MPG I felt like I was rich all of a sudden.
All in all even the very worst mileage now seems damned good.
