Does it have a rubber gasket at the base of it .. ??
I'd call the manufacturer and ask them if it should have a spacer.
Why wouldn't they build the thing so that it wouldn't need a spacer ... ??
I asked my friend ...Bubba, and he said to make a spacer out of 1/4" plywood ......
