I had to cut into it about 1/4" or so. The cover sits around part of the top/back side of the wheel so it has a uniform appearance, but that is not what I will use to mount it. As it is removable now until I get the covers where I want them, I plan to secure it with 2 small bolts from the back of the wheel which go into the back side of the controls themselves.
From what I've seen in pictures and looking at the airbag itself, it looks like it will only split inside of the stitching. Unless it comes out and over the sides, which I don't see it doing, I think it'll stay in place for the most part.

The bag expands well beyond the stitching. If you keep the bolts to the left then the bag should just push the whole thing to the side and all is good.
The one in the pic I attached is the stock 2017s. The BRZs have buttons on both sides of the wheel.
