I do recommend heat shields for hot components so that 1. you don't radiate as much heat and 2. the rain doesn't fall directly on them.
I have all my exhaust components wrapped; blanket on my turbo etc, I can't imagine they would fair to well long term with getting soaked in the rain/snow.

I'm hoping sooner than later as my wife starts her new job that I'll be able to get another car, I could now but I'd rather not stretch it if I dont have to.
