Putting your kids in some old deathtrap because they are going "inevitably" bang and scratch it up just means you value money more than their safety.

Nothing wrong with a used Volvo S80. They are safe. Come to think of it a Toyota Avalone is pretty safe too.
Small cars are invariably less safe in a crash than bigger cars and there is no way around that. Sports cars are not always safer in a crash than bigger cars and SUVs. Used does not make the car less safe unless its more than 5 years or so of technology behind the times.
My kid will get a larger car initially until he learns how to handle cars in general. As skill improves he can go smaller and faster. If he wants to race he can go with me to the autox / drag strip to get it out of his system.
