I know what you mean about looking 'cheaper'; but when i think about it; it's more about whether the car is clean or dirty, and the quality of the aftermarket accessories that influence my perception. here's my own personal take on the colours, that i went through when deciding which one to buy (BRZ colours only):
1. white - definitely shows of details and accents the best, since they're all black. however, i don't think it shows off body lines as well as the darker colours as it's not as 'reflective'. i've also associated the colour white with corporate cars and vans, plus its so common. but, it really does look great and 'high class' when done right.
2. red - sexy sports car colour, but i'm old school and i've always associated red paint with fading on the top surfaces. that might have changed, but i also didn't want to attract so much attention on the road. when it comes to showing off accents and lines, it's about the same as white to me. doesn't always show off the lines as well as a clean, dark car.
3. silver - really nice colour and shows lines (to me) better than white or red. but, a bit boring and neutral.
4. WRB - i think that this is the best balance of showing off accents and lines since it's a 'medium' colour. WRB would probably have been my 2nd choice. i've always thought that WRB is a gorgeous colour.
5. galaxy blue - i'm not a dark blue fan for cars, so i didn't pick that, but it's about on par with DGM as far as showing off details and lines. the black plastic accents tend to blend in unless it's in direct sunlight, but a clean car really shows off the subtle lines very well.
6. DGM - same issue as the galaxy blue. shows off the lines really well; but not enough contrast with the black plastic to show them off unless under bright sunlight. however, they don't disappear completely like on a black car. i picked DGM as my first choice because it was a more subtle colour (which fit my personality), i feel that it's a more 'mature' colour (which is what i wanted), and i've always thought of dark grey to be a 'classy' colour. again, this is all just in my head. looks black at night, but definitely reflects differently under headlights.
8. black - i've owned a black car before and i will never own another one again. great looking when clean, but looks bad faster than the lighter colours with the same amount of dust. no contrast with the black plastic accents but shows off the lines very well. maintaining a black car was a no-go from the start for me.
If i bought another BRZ, it'd probably be WRB just for a change. but i'm happy with DGM. again, whether a car looks 'downgraded' or 'classy' depends a lot on how clean its kept and the taste of the aftermarket accessories installed.
