Proper maintenance, don't mod beyond the internals abilities (can be a fine line), and above all DO NOT OVER REV. You read loads of engine failure horror stories here but when you start to look closely you will see that in most (there are exceptions) cases there are clues as to what may have gone wrong. Most engines with issues have been modded, had guys new to working on cars doing their own service or had people new to MTs where the risk of accidental, miss shift, over rev is greatly escalated. I have watched the blown engine threads very closely and even though many deny they ever screwed up there are certain indicators they did. Now before everybody gets pissy with me I repeat, not all the reports have such indicators attached just many of them.
Add this to the fact that we hear about and focus on the issues here which blows the whole thing out of proportion to reality and it is easy to get the perception there is a big problem when in fact there is not. I doubt the overall engines failure for these cars has exceeded 2% but of course am not privy to the numbers to prove that.
Take care of the engine and it will last a long time.
