I understand the sentiment, but the same can be said for the 86. In the end, you don't "need" anything above basic power to go anywhere any longer in a car, if you are on a paved public road (at least in the US). So, following that logic we should all be driving a Chevy Spark.
There's lots of things I consider a waste of money (a big ass diamond ring, or aero mods on a Civic, for example) but if they make you happy, its well spent money as long as it isn't mine.
My second choice when I bought the FR-S was a 2012 Camaro ZL1. If the Camaro had been the 2017 current model, I would have probably purchased it, or if the 2016 'Vette was available then, it would have been a top contender.
I could afford any of the 3, but the FR-S was fast enough, fun enough, and made me smile enough that the price differential wasn't worth the extra expense (particularly since I pay cash for cars, that changes your tune quickly). I would never have tracked any of the three (I've done my track time, not my thing anymore) but I would have enjoyed them equally.
