Having spent an entire childhood raised in Alaska. After driving RDW, FWD, 4X4, AWD ... my preference was always a 4X4.
If your winters are mild .... the FRS with snow tires is fine.
If your in an area with serious snow and ice. Get a 4X4 or AWD beater if you can afford it. Use the FRS as it was designed in dry conditions and the beater for the snow and ice.
