I just made the journey from Idaho Falls, ID to Phoenix in 6 days. Flew in, bought it with 200 miles on it, drove back. Put exactly 2000 miles on it, funnily enough, hitting Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park(s).
If you go you'll have a great time; I'd go down the coast even if it adds some distance.
