About a year ago when I was driving a 328i I hit a dead deer on the highway while I was coming home. It was around 9 pm and there were no cars around me. The deer was at the top of a crescent right in the middle of the lane I was in. The result of the crash was a front bumper replacement, new radiator and skid plate, washer bottles, and an alignment.
When I called Geico they told me I would be given no fault for the accident. After all was said and done I paid about a third of what I was expecting to pay. In your case, if you describe to them how it was extremely dark outside and you did not see the pothole at all they will probably not fault you.
