Short Attention Span?
With Transient attention being as short as five seconds and Selective sustained attention lasting as long as five minutes, Neil Postman in his book, "Amusing Ourselves to Death," suggests attention span of humans is decreasing as use of modern technology, especially television, increases. Internet browsing may have a similar effect because it enables users to move easily from one page to another. Most internet users spend less than one minute on the average website.
However, there is hope and it is called ART (
Attention restoration theory) which asserts people can concentrate better after spending time in nature, or even looking at scenes of nature. Natural environments abound with "soft fascinations" which a person can reflect upon in "effortless attention", such as clouds moving across the sky, leaves rustling in a breeze or water bubbling over rocks in a stream.
