In his original post race interview (before the stewards meeting), he said he was having brake trouble. Hamilton admitted that Rosberg likely had a steering full of brake warning lights, and Wolff doing damage control said it was a brake-by-wire failure. IIRC, Sahara had a brake failure, see Perez for what that looks like...
Anyways, Nico probably got off pretty easy given his aggressive driving, but I feel like the tumble from 1st to 4th was damaging enough.
