can't speak for the 2017 model but the automatic transmission is no slouch and the paddle shifters can help you shift in the middle of the turn with full control of the steering wheel using both hands..and the downshift rev matches are perfect

the manual might be more engaging therefore more fun but if you don't know how to drive manual it might be frustrating and not as enjoyable at first if you are not proficient in handling the clutch

in regards to family you can teach them how to drive manual once you figure it out yourself but i say test drive both first and see how you feel

can't go wrong with either transmission honestly...only the fools say you need to get this car in manual only and hate on auto
