Like most new cars with multi-stage paint jobs, this is actually the (or one of two) color coat of the paint without the overlaying effect (whiteout/hot lava) and the clear coats. Most of the engine bays are just unfinished paint jobs, but I don't think that this one is only the primer. It wouldn't be the first time I was incorrect, however.

I did study and look at it the first week I had mine, and initially thought it wasn't finished the same way. But looking at a Subie XV whathaveyou in the same/similar color might give some insight, or check out the tC's Cement Grey color for a similar effect.
