On the opposite end of the spectrum but of about the same vintage I received my first car at 13 and was driving on a regular basis by 14. It was not legal of course but I looked way older than I was and there were no computers for the cops to look you up from their car so I got away with it.
By the time I was half way through 17 I was operating equipment and driving vehicles that would scare the crap out of some older people.
