Gimmick, maybe, maybe not... always a good idea to not have shavings in general.

But unlike a transmission or differential, there's nothing to "grind" in an engine. If you have that many shavings to do harm, there's bigger problems than just "shavings that can be easily washed away". Think about it: the shavings are there, if there is no magnetic drain plug it'd just sit around in the engine oil or oil filter... which is why there's an oil filter to begin with.

But if you must have a magnet somewhere, get a FilterMag for $60 and reuse it forever, on any car you will ever own. And run whatever oil filter you want.
