This is actually the direction I'm going. I used spacers and an extension under the front of the seat rails in my 240Z. I understand now that it is frowned upon and I can see why. Submarining is also a concern.
My plans are to extend the telescoping feature of the steering column while maintaining all the stock features, including airbag. There is a balance between collapse to prevent impalement and enough rigidity to support airbag deployment. This will still be my daily/XC rig.
