would compression make big difference when adjusted. I keep reading that is only for bumps etc, and this track is smooth as no bumps

If you're trying to test one variable, you have to keep all the others constant.
IE, if you normally drive in pedal dance mode, but decide you want to make suspension changes, you're changing a variable by then driving with the TC on.
