I can tell when the DI system switches. I've worked on other DI equipped cars and they all sound pretty much the same. They click-away, but don't chirp. If you ask me, I suspect there is something with the belt (not necessarily the tensioner). First off, It didn't make that chirp noise until a few days into ownership. Secondly this is the first Subaru-based boxer engine I've seen with a self adjusting serpentine belt tensioner. All the other ones I've worked on you turned an adjustment bolt/screw (and they'd squeal if you were a little off). Working as a dealer tech (granted, not Scion or Subaru) I can't help but wonder if there might eventually be a bulletin about this. Im not saying the guy is BS-ing, but there probably just aren't enough instances yet for it to become a "known" issue.
Its almost a clutch release bearing chirp, but the noise is un-changed when the pedal is applied.
