There's actually no upside. DRLs reduced accidents in the first two years after they were introduced. Then, when people got accustomed to seeing them, they blended into the normal visual noise we see every day and stopped making any difference at all.
With no upside, if someone doesn't like the way they look, that right there is a downside. Plus there's more crap on the car to go wrong and have to replace.
