I grab songs from Itunes straight to USB and they work, or I go into explorer view, get music file, and add picture straight to there. Jpeg. It works without a problem.
You're lucky I was adding new music to my USB.
Before, just straight ripped song from CD
After, went back into iTunes/Windows explorer, found file, right clicked and added album art. .Jpeg
