For a track-only set of wheels for a mildly experienced driver such as yourself, I'd consider Hoosier R7s. Keep in mind they generally run a little wider than some DOT tires, so a 245/45R17 would be a LOT of tire. I would recommend a square setup, staggered tires aren't necessary for these cars. There are many other setup changes you can make to adjust the balance before running a skinnier front tire, that's just leaving grip on the table.
