Yes. Don't just "top it off". It is a system that shouldn't consume any of its fluid. So if it is low your brake pads are low or you have a leak. Most likely just pads wearing out.

I would also say try not to ignore your warning lights even if things feel fine. I did a brake job and my brakes felt fine and even did some spirited driving. But in 2 days my brake fluid went from max to min because 1 bleeder was ever so slightly loose.
