We were going through a busy intersection in my trusty 1948 Chevrolet, when all of a sudden nothing would work (gears/clutch just nothing working). I figured it was a blown clutch. My girl's sister stuck her head out the window and said, "Roger, your rear wheel is coming off".

I thought, what the heck does she know about it! I jumped out, in heavy honking traffic and sure enough the axle had broken and the wheel was about a foot away from the car.......

So, some folks helped me push it up into this old Pop service station. The old boy said, yep you got a broken axle fer sure. We pushed it off to the side and he said I could leave it there until we got an axle.

So, my girlfriend called her father and he drove 70 miles to pick us up. The next day (Saturday) was cold with snow on the ground, but I went over to this old farm/junk yard and pulled an axle out of a junk car that was sitting in the frozen mud.

I hitched a ride back to Columbus that Sunday night and delivered axil to the old boy, who had the rear end dissembled and informed me that the bad axil had crystalized ....... the OTHER axle was badly bent.

So, next weekend, back to the junkyard to get the axle out of the other side ...... and yes, it was still snowing...... Took the axle back up to the old boy and he installed them that week.

On Friday, I picked up my car and ask him how much I owed him ..... he asked how much money I had ...... I said $27.50. He asked if I was a student and I said yes ......so he said the bill comes to $20 ..... plus he fill up my gas tank.

Nice people, back-in-the-day ........

The moral of this long story is, that if you have stressed one axle to the breaking point, there is a good chance the other axle is about to break, so replace them both.
