It always has been a marketing strategy... I don't doubt that. That's how they sell cars.
Why would this car be called a Levin? They didn't call it a Trueno... 86 is 86, marketed to refer to its light-weight FR platform. I'm pretty sure we can all understand why they didn't have their own Toyota engine in there and why they went with Subaru instead. (It's the modern age now, tech evolves and corporate shares instead of having to "invent" a new engine)
I respect that you live in Japan, and with all due respect... it doesn't mean just anybody living in Japan knows everything... That's like saying because I live in Canada, I know how to build igloos (I don't, lol)...
I've owned an AE86 for 5 years, and I've been in that scene for a while myself waaaaay before the 86/BRZ were even in concept stages. In fact, it was my first car ever.
