My dad drove only VWs. Oldest one was a 59 bus that we still used to haul firewood from the woods at the far end of the runway. Dad and I were out running errands in the 61 beetle when the shift linkage broke.
He popped up the back seat, pulled off the access panel, and with a screwdriver, showed me how to work the gear selector from the front of the transaxle. We drove it all the way home without missing a single shift, pulled out the linkage tube, welded it and stuck it back in there all the same day.
I don't have any exciting gearhead stories. Just a lot of repairs and some cool rebuilds of boring cars.
