I'm wondering the same thing as you now. I don't know what would be considered an excessive gap. This is the first time I have paid attention to the gap as well. I thought I found my trunk and fender gap uneven. But when I checked the other Toyota cars, their trunk and fender gap was as uneven as my FR-S. So, mine must be acceptable.
