Nothing wrong or noob with using the handbrake. Whatever suits you, if you don't want to hurry with your feet, or if you care about the nerves of the driver behind you in case you roll back a bit, use the handbrake. Otherwise, go with foot brake.


The decision should depend on what you are comfortable with, what is convenient in particular cirmstances, and on the steepness of the hill. Not on someone on the internet saying it's noob.


Before I started braking with my left foot, I sometimes used handbrake when starting on very steep hills in an AT car. So what.
