From my experience with the BRZ, 2nd gear doesn't like to be rushed. Also it may just be my technique (or lack thereof) but when I was driving, the shifts were only smooth at 3k RPM or higher. It's notchy going into first when cold, and it felt MILES better after changing out the fluid.
