I covered this last year when I built my motor and discovered the valves had changed. The short version is nobody really knows for sure. Some say to help with the rocker arms to keep them from dropping out. Others say it was to cut production cost by making the valves match and no need to manufacture 2 different valve sizes.
I wish I had more info but I really didn't put much into it besides getting new aftermarket ones made.
