Were you or your parents born there?
My grandmother was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1894, but her parents both were from German speaking countries (Hesse and Pommern). She spoke German at home and didn't speak any English until 1st grade. Even in her 80's, she had a remarkably thick German accent, especially for a woman born in the U.S.!
