The car delivered January 7th. The sequential plates delivered from the dealer last Tuesday. My appointment with the DMV for pick up was the next day. (perfect timing) I didn't have to pay anything extra for them to transfer the registration from the sequential to the personalized plates. They just let me use the same stickers since I hadn't used them yet. She said normally they would have just given me new ones.
From my past experience, they want you to surrender your other plates if you are immediately wanting to register the plates to a vehicle. Take your current plates in with you to save yourself time of having to go back out for them.
