However, when they get a bit bigger and become somewhat self sufficient, they will be happy kids (for short distances). You just need to practice your "over the shoulder" toss of tissues and crackers.

Agreed!!!! However there is that inbetween phase where they go from the rear facing car seat to forward facing where there legs aren't long enough to get under the forward seats and its just as uncomfortable....manageable but uncomfortable.
