It is not the same. A turbo wastegate vents exhaust gas slowing the rate of spin of the turbine/compressor. This in turn controls boost.

Venting the boost pressure in a supercharged setup doesn't control the spin of the compressor. The compressor spin is directly proportional to engine speed.
