Few quick notes.
1.) Whining about straight cut gear ... whine ... is just that. Whining. Deal with it, or don't. People don't whine about their rattle-can 3 inch downpipe and exhaust, or the vacuum-cleaner-esque howl of the turbo.
2.) Helical gears are theoretically stronger, but only provided that the transmission can handle the associated thrust loading. I'd love to find that as soon as the gears can hold the torque, the snap rings and thrust washers start to fail. That would be poetic justice in its purest form.
3.) TL : DR, massive power demands compromises. If you're unwilling to compromise, you're unwilling to make massive power.
