Comparing to the mustang isn't really a good comparison IMHO. Many people who buy mustangs know that is what they want 100% before purchasing. Even if it has issues they may still overlook them because it's a mustang. This car is different being new and not truly having any heritage to fall back on. People don't buy it for exactly the same reasons, and many of its buyers get bored and switch platforms every few years anyway even if they liked it just for something different.
I think If all mustangs were 4 cylinder those repeat buyer numbers would drop too.

So, would a Miata be a better comparison? It's similar specs to our car, less power more handling oriented but it's been around for years. The newer refresh model actually looks a bit appealing to me.
