I agree with you, although I do want it to be secure. A better solution is what Honda does with the Accord (or at least did in 2004, the one in our home fleet). The back seat opens either with a latch in the trunk or with the non-valet key in the inside of the car (lock is above the rear seat).

I pretty much avoid it myself and typically avoid places that require it. That said, the hospital system where I work does offer it, for free, to patients and their families, which I think is a nice touch and is a big win with the patients.
